Job Description:

The Department of Geology is an academic unit within the Faculty of Science. The Department of Geology is one of the premier Earth Science departments in South Africa, and indeed, the African continent. The department is centrally located with respect to the mineral and mining industry in southern Africa, with which it has close ties. The department is host to the DST-NRF centre of excellence in mineral and energy resource analysis (CIMERA), a national hub of research and world-class analytical facilities. Our staff members have a diverse background, with excellent national and international reputations. The core functions of the department are teaching, training and research. The department is situated on the APK Campus in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, and the majority of instruction takes place here, while several courses are offered to Engineering students on the DFC campus (Doornfontein).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist academic staff in preparing sample material for practicals
  • Prepare microscope thin sections, polished sections, and block mounts for analysis for in support of research
  • Provide ad hoc relief work when other technical staff are absent or on leave as required by the department
  • Ensure involvement for the betterment of the institution and community
  • Regular first aid training and technical skill development

Job Requirements:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Two years relevant experience in a tertiary Geology Department environment or mining organization
  • Experience in geological sample preparation (i.e., preparation of thin and polished sections)
  • Familiarity with geological sample preparation procedures
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience working in a geological environment, preferably within a university setting.
  • Skill in working with equipment necessary for the preparation of geological samples for analysis.
  • Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
  • Geological sample preparation – thin and polished section skills
  • Working within a “geological environment”
  • Skills in working with machinery/equipment necessary to prepare samples for analysis
  • Driver’s license
  • Well-organized
  • Precise, attention to detail
