Job Description:
The School of Oral Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the Witwatersrand educate and train oral health professionals in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Health. Being one of few oral health training institutions in South Africa, the School prides itself in graduating world-class oral health professionals every year.
The School invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for appointment to the position of Oral Hygienist. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of appropriate teaching and training to oral hygiene students and conduct research for the benefit of Oral Hygiene Auxiliary Training (OHAT) and oral health services on the Extended Training Platform (ETP). Furthermore, the incumbent will determine the need for and render oral health promotion activities and clinical services in his/her designated area to individual patients and thereby communities and relevant stakeholders.
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in outreach activities and service learning projects.
- Teach, train, assess and supervise Oral Hygiene students
- Ensure client’s rights and patients’ rights as per National Patients’ Rights Charter and Batho Pele Principles
- Conduct research that will contribute to the Oral Health Sciences body of knowledge.
- Provide a comprehensive array of assessment and treatment procedures within the Oral Hygienist scope of practice
- Participate and facilitate in continuous professional development (CPD) as required by HPCSA
- Practice and maintain infection control standards, in addition ensure adherence to strict quality control measures
- Provide reports of student outreach/ETP and clinical activities
- Monitor and ensure correct utilization of oral hygiene equipment’s by all students and staff.
Job Requirements:
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Diploma / Degree in Oral Hygiene from an accredited institution
- Knowledge of and skills in clinical oral hygiene to provide professional treatment for the patient
- A postgraduate qualification will be an advantage
- Publications will be an added advantage
- Registration with the HPCSA in the category independent practice, and proof of current registration
- Experience in teaching, supervising and assessing students in clinical and classroom environments an advantage
- Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
- Understanding of current health and public service legislation, regulations and policies; including related to training of students
- Research and report writing skills an advantage
