Job Description:

The School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is regarded as Africa’s largest mining engineering school and is ranked among the top mining engineering schools in the world. It has a capacity for about 550 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate students, with 22 Academic and 12 Technical and Administrative staff positions. The School has a good research record and support system for the personal development of academic staff.

The School is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Data Scientist for a Lecturer position in Data Science for Mining Engineering.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties will include personal research; undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing; supervision and/or co-supervision of postgraduate research students; and participation in administrative activities of the School, including any other duty as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of School.

Job Requirements:

Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree with a focus on Data Science. Evidence of eligibility to undertake postgraduate study for a PhD in Data Science or post-doctoral research in Data Science. Evidence of at least one published peer-reviewed research paper in a conference proceedings and/or journal is also required for appointment. Other advantages include: Teaching experience at university level; Track record of successful supervision of postgraduate research students; Relevant experience in or knowledge of the application to Mining Engineering of Data Science, Data Analytics, and Programming in Python; Membership with a relevant professional body or Registration as a professional with a relevant with a relevant statutory body.
