Job Description:

The purpose of the job is to describe and set the current, preferred and future architecture of all levels of IT infrastructure (e.g. workstations, AV equipment, network equipment, servers, storage, data centres, etc.); software (e.g. operating systems, database management, security, desktop applications, etc.); architecture design principles (e.g. security, information handling, monitoring, access control, integration, standardisation, governance, compliance, etc.) and alignment within the UP environment; as well as research on current and emerging technologies in order to find appropriate technology fit for UP.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Set and describe architecture through technology roadmaps :
    • Bring an understanding of the enterprise, business system, business process and industry to the team(s) supporting or interfacing with the application landscape;
    • Maintain current knowledge of all relevant technology developments, and seek opportunities to deploy new technologies that benefit UP;
  • Manage the project start architecture process:
    • Review and integrate all requirements for the application landscape, including functional, security, usability, performance, quality, and operations requirements;
    • Review and integrate changes to the technical architecture for the development, execution, and operations environments. Make all final recommendations regarding hardware, network products, system software, and security. Collaborate with the appropriate operations and/or capability development representatives for confirmation and final decisions;
    • Identify, clarify, and resolve system development and maintenance activity issues and risks, escalating them as needed;
  • Technology investigations:
    • Research and evaluate new technologies, generating possible recommendations for use in supporting the business objectives;
    • Research and evaluate technology optimisation opportunities;
    • Review and integrate changes to the technical architecture for the development, execution, and operations environments. Make all final recommendations regarding hardware, network products, system software, and security;
  • Manage the security architecture function:
    • Develop an information security architecture, manage the security architect and ensure that his/her activities enhance the IT security of the University;
    • Include security requirements and viewpoint in all architecture artefacts, e.g. technology roadmaps, project start architectures and architecture diagrams;
  • Run the enterprise architecture process:
    • Create architecture scope, definition, construction, and execute and define the complete technical infrastructure environment;
    • Consult with and develop technical resources for methods, procedures, and standards to use during system development;
    • Contribute to the IT strategy and strategic plan;
    • Summarise technology-scanning results for input into the IT strategic plan and budget;
  • Architecture diagrams:
    • The gathering of relevant information, the drawing, approval, and the publishing of architectural diagrams for all technologies or projects;
    • Contextualise the architecture diagrams within the installed-UP environment, and include the architecture diagrams in the project start architecture.

Job Requirements:

  • Relevant four year degree/Honours in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electronic Engineering, or IT Management Sciences (focusing on Technology Strategy and Architecture), WITH
  • A total of six years’ working experience, of which two years should be in management, in the following:
    • As an Enterprise/Solutions/ Technology Architect, with a sound understanding of the theoretical body of knowledge for Enterprise
    • Architecture (e.g. Zachman, Ross, TOGAF);
    • A meta model definition and formulation for Enterprise Architecture;
    • Designing, building and operating IT systems (including IT infrastructure and applications);
    • A research, or applied research, capacity.
  • Knowledge:
    • A deep understanding of the technology architecture discipline, processes, concepts and best practices ;
    • Relevant legislation;
  • Technical competencies:
    • Deep technical knowledge across various technologies and applications; p roject/programme management capability;
  • Behavioural competencies:
    • Strong strategic planning capabilities (approaches and processes, tools, deliverables);
    • Interpersonal skills;
    • Independent worker with initiative;
    • Innovative thinker;
    • Ability to understand what is happening in the industry in general, and product roadmaps.
