Job Description:

To oversee the operations associated with planning, coordinating, prioritizing and monitoring the work results in SMUD’s fleet department. Optimizing SMUD’s fleet by enabling long term strategic plans and effectively managing resource needs to meet operational requirements in a safe, compliant and cost effective manner.

Nature and Scope: This job classification functions in a management capacity by assisting with development and implementation of strategic planning for the business unit. Manages resource needs and supports selecting, training, motivating, evaluating and development of staff. In addition, this position ensures safe work practices, work quality, data accuracy, sufficient workforce resources, as well as compliance with applicable rules, policies, regulations and procedures.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Negotiates service level agreements with all internal customers and ensures department strategic plan and work activities are aligned and measured in accordance with stated objectives.
  • Drives analytics and fleet benchmarking programs focused on fleet reliability, availability, cost, efficiency, asset management, vehicle lifecycle strategy, and labor utilization/productivity.
  • Develops strategy for comprehensive multi-year fleet capital investment.
  • Drives results and work prioritization process.
  • Provides coaching, performance and development plan feedback, and identifies and resolves staff deficiencies; providing recommendations to management on staffing, discipline and termination actions, and staff training and development; and performing ongoing, assigned operational tasks.
  • Establishes safety policies and procedures in Fleet Operations aligned with enterprise policy, procedure, and goals. Performs related duties as required.
  • Creates long term (3 to 5 year) O&M and capital budgets and forecasting linked directly to SMUD business unit drivers.
  • Provides direction to staff for annual performance goal development in alignment of SMUD business strategy, core values, and key competencies for each function.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance or related field is desired or equivalent experience. 11 years of experience required without a degree.
  • Seven or more (7+) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience related to business operations, management, process improvement, business negotiations, performance management, strategy development and execution.
  • Ten or more years supervising trade operation, preferable a utility fleet organization
  • Three or more years of trade related work, preferably fleet related; welding, technician, mechanic
  • Experience working in a utility operations environment
  • MBA is highly desired
