Job Description:
The Health Systems Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council conducts research which informs and supports decision-making in health and social policy to strengthen health systems to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). By strengthening decision-making and health systems we aim to improve health throughout the life-course. We evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of care delivery models in communities, schools, and health facilities. To ensure relevance of our research, we apply implementation science principles and approaches, and engage and partner with government departments and non-government organisations, as well as with communities and other stakeholders.
Job Responsibilities:
- Present research results at local and national conferences and meetings.
- Write scientific reports and papers for publication in local and international peer reviewed journals.
- Lead the qualitative study components of mixed-methods intervention evaluation, and coordinate partners involved in the qualitative research.
- Contribute to the scientific community through the peer-review of journal articles
- Lead the implementation of innovative iterative intervention evaluation activities, inclusive of reporting back to implementers and stakeholders to inform the adaptive intervention design
- Design and develop a framework for the analysis of qualitative data, build capacity and mentor junior scientists in the qualitative analysis process, lead the analysis of qualitative datasets
- Contribute to research translation activities within the HSRU and SAMRC more broadly aiming to translate research into policy and action, through for example media liaison and engagement with policy makers.
- Build capacity of team members in qualitative research and provide qualitative research training and mentoring
- Develop qualitative research tools, and study specific procedural tools
- Supervision of MPH and PhD students
- Manage teams of junior scientists and qualitative data collectors
Job Requirements:
- Proficiency in computer assisted qualitative research analysis software
- Experience working with both non-governmental and government departments in health interventions in South Africa.
- Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
- Experience providing academic supervision to postgraduate university students, with proven supervision of 2 or more MPH students to graduation,
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Proven publication record in national and international journals, with at least 12 peer-reviewed ISI journal articles in related topic areas, with at least 6 as first author
- Ability to present effectively to diverse audiences, demonstrated by experience translating scientific research findings for a non-academic audience, including the public media
- 10 or more presentations at local and international conferences.
- Experience leading and coordinating multi-site qualitative research teams
- Proven publication record in national and international journals on sexual and reproductive health, with at least 20 peer-reviewed ISI journal articles in related topic areas, with at least 10 as first author
- Experience with capacity building and mentoring junior qualitative researchers
- Knowledge of health systems research related to adolescent sexual and reproductive health in South Africa.
- Experience working as a part of mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative) research teams
- Ability to be flexible and adapt data collection methods and study procedures to pandemic or crisis situations, to ensure minimal study disruption
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and organisational skills
- Proven track record as reviewer of journal manuscripts in the field of SRH.
- Involvement in international collaborative research
- Experience working remotely, managing studies in pandemic situations, and managing remote-working teams
- Experience providing qualitative research and skills training
