Job Description:

The Agri-Food Inspector – Meat Hygiene reports to the Regional Inspection Supervisor within the Processing and Meat Inspection Branch. The position is responsible for meat inspection in assigned provincially licensed abattoirs. In addition, the position may be assigned responsibility for inspection of other provincially licensed food processing premises, dairy farms and other farms, as well as milk haulers and receivers. Inspection duties include antemortem and postmortem assessment of animals, evaluating food safety risks, ensuring appropriate food safety standards are applied, and enforcing compliance with programs and legislation.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of humane handling of animals.
  • Knowledge of microbiological, chemical and physical hazards associated with the processing, preservation and storage of food.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines and sudden changes in priorities .
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in order to enable the sound delivery of technical information to others.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write letters, reports, notes, and proposals to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to distinguish between various colours in the colour spectrum, including red and green and effectively work in conditions where lighting may be poor. Ability to communicate and hear alarms in a noisy environment, while wearing hearing protection.
  • Ability to work in an environment where working conditions may be cool, damp and noisy and ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to travel to different work locations throughout rural Manitoba and provide own transportation. Must be able to work varied and extended hours as required, including overnights away from home.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Food Science, Public Health, Microbiology, or a Diploma in Animal Health Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A satisfactory criminal record check.
  • Must pass medical assessment and demonstrate medical fitness to perform duties. TB testing and rabies vaccination will be required.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have the ability to travel to different work locations throughout rural Manitoba and provide own transportation. Must be able to work varied and extended hours as required, including overnights away from home.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with hostile clients, resolve conflict situations and work in a team environment.
  • Experience in slaughtering animals, regulatory food processing/meat inspection, or handling and butchering livestock.
  • Ability to assess the health of an animal before and after slaughter.
